Who are your heroes?
The marginalized in our society. The disabled, the single parent, the single person over 30, the pregnant teen, the transgender, the divorcee, the former felon, the undocumented immigrant. They are my heroes because they often contribute so much to our society while not having their stories valued or told. They live life with scarlet letters, yet love those who often devalue them with the same ferocity in which they are degraded. If we are to be one, then we will have to learn to love and work with others the way the marginalized amongst us have been doing for all or most of their lives.

What do you hope your legacy will be?
I would want my headstone to say, “He left it all on the field.” I would wish the people who spoke at my funeral, who wrote about my life, believe and share that I used absolutely everything at my disposal to love others well when it came to my life. I want to be known as someone who spent his life pointing others towards God.

How has the current situation impacted your thoughts on leadership?
The current state of our country has reinforced the value of integrity and character in leadership. The toll of leading with integrity and character has also been reinforced. Leading well in times of tension is not easy. Leading is a calling and comes at a high cost. These lessons mirror the best example of leadership shown by the greatest leader ever known, Jesus Christ.

What's on your bucket list?
A culinary tour of Italy with my wife.
