David Heit, AIA, NCARB, engaged as Architect-In-Residence at Benedictine College’s architecture program
David Heit, Founding Principal of Civium Architecture and Planning, has been engaged as an Architect-In-Residence at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas.
The college’s new architecture major is part of a broader vision to develop students “who will transform the world through their commitment to intellectual, personal and spiritual greatness.”
Teaching the senior capstone design studio, Heit brings a real-world perspective to students in their studies of classical architecture.
“Benedictine’s focus on Classical studies aligns with my philosophy of contemporary architecture. A Classical approach is not only relevant today, but it can create stronger, more connected communities,” says Heit.
Heit, with more than 27 years as a professional architect, is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, and among a small group of contemporary architects educated in classical architecture and urbanism.
Benedictine immerses architecture students in an interdisciplinary curriculum, integrating engineering, architecture and design with history and theory. Pivotal at the midpoint of the curriculum is the Summer Study Abroad.
“My experience living and studying in Rome, Italy, affirmed for me the value of tradition in design,” says Heit. “This experience can be transformational for students. It’s another way that Benedictine brings relevance and meaning to their architecture program.”
Heit has previously served as president of both AIA Topeka and AIA Kansas, promoting the value of good architecture to the broader community. He currently serves on the SLI Topeka Board of Directors and the City of Topeka Landmarks Commission.
