Topeka Vendor Market Spotlight: M&M Woodworks
Mike and Mary Hawkins have been creating wood products and gifts for over 25 years. M&M Woodworks is located in the lower level of TVM and is filled with game boards that are perfect for summer evenings on the porch.
Tell us about your business:
Officially M&M Woodworks started January 11, 2020, but we have been building wood gifts for years for family and friends. Our business name is M&M Woodworks for Mike and Mary Hawkins. Mike does the design and construction of the projects, and Mary is responsible for quality control, finishing, and pyrography (the art of wood burning). Most of the items are created with local or reclaimed wood sources. Our past projects have included doll cradles, cedar hope chest, clocks, Adirondack chairs, and kaleidoscopes, just to name a few.
What is the focus of your merchandise?
Our main focus is game boards like Wahoo, Joker & Marbles, Cribbage, and Chinese Checkers. We also make cheese slicers and cutting/charcuterie boards. We currently work with a gentleman in Texas that sells our Wahoo and Joker & Marble Game Boards online at Traditional Game & Toy Company. Just this year, we decided to market some of our game boards and other wood products exclusively with Topeka Vendors Market.
What can we find at your booth that we can not find anywhere else?
In addition to our selection of game boards, our booth features some unique pyrography creations. You'll find Coasters, and original art pieces like Owl Eyes (Burls), and Bee & Thistle (Hackberry) and other décor and accent pieces.
What is the most unique item we have ever sold?
The most unique item we sold was a large Welcome Sign that we constructed for a lodge near Randolph, KS. We used a large slab of Splatted Sycamore. Mike made the lettering for the sign, the frames and epoxied the slab. Mary designed the 3 wood burned (pyrography) landscape scenes around the lodge’s property.
