Plaza Glow Returns on Dec. 1st
Topeka’s most quaint shopping center -- will once again host PLAZA GLOW, the popular lighting ceremony at the shopping center. The event will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 1 with the lights coming on at 6 p.m. The event will occur regardless of the weather -- rain, snow or SHINE.
The inaugural year for the event was 2008, when the shopping plaza was purchased by Pat Gideon, President and CEO of Silver Lake Bank, and his father, Clarence Gideon in 2007. Plaza Glow was initiated by Pat Gideon and Dr. Frank Johnson, and was modeled after a similar event at Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, MO.
“It just made good sense to do the event for the residents of Topeka and especially the neighbors that live nearby,” said Pat Gideon.
Plaza Glow returned in 2022, following a two-year hiatus during the COVID pandemic.
Previous years consisted of carriage rides through the park and some of the locals have asked that this return if possible. Luminaries delightfully lit the path for the horses to traverse through the beautiful streets of Westboro.
The architecture of the homes that were decorated with twinkling lights always kindled the spirits of even the Grinchiest of hearts. Truly a sight to behold!
Westboro Mart Shopping Center features an artistic, eclectic array of specialty shops, including Porterfield’s Florist, Patio, Pool & Fireplace, Beauchamp Gallery, Stone & Story Real Estate Group, Salut Wine & Cocktails, Adoption Services, Aura Salon and SoHo Interiors.
This year’s event will feature drawings for prizes, specials in store at the shops and giveaways from the merchants. Nearly every merchant will have goodies to share for visitors to their shops.
Food trucks will be at the VFW in the parking lot so families can get dinner, then go inside the VFW to eat. While they are there, the kids can visit Santa! Kansas Children’s Discovery Center also will have stations of fun activities for the kids.
