Greater Topeka Partnership Announces 29th Annual Miracle On Kansas Avenue Parade Bigger Than Ever With New Marching Band Competition

The Greater Topeka Partnership is thrilled to announce that the 29th Annual Miracle on Kansas Avenue Parade, presented by Giant Communications, will be bigger and more spectacular than ever this year. This year, ten marching bands from across the state of Kansas will be invited to participate in a KSHSAA approved event and will compete for ratings.

The parade will take place on December 7, 2024, beginning at 6 PM at 5th and Kansas Avenue. Marching bands may arrive at 4 PM. Each band selected to participate will receive $1,000, adding to the excitement and prestige of the event. The first ten bands to register will be given the opportunity to perform. The competition will be scored by three professionals, using a marching band parade rubric. “We are delighted to approve the Greater Topeka Partnership for the Miracle on Kansas Avenue Parade competition,” said Craig Manteuffel from the Kansas State High School Activities Association. “This event not only celebrates the holiday season but also provides a fantastic opportunity for high school bands to showcase their talents in a competitive and festive environment.”

John Koop, Vice President of Events and Resource Development for the Greater Topeka Partnership, shared his enthusiasm: “We are incredibly excited to welcome these talented marching bands from across Kansas to Topeka. The Miracle on Kansas Avenue Parade is a cherished holiday tradition, and this new competition element will bring even more energy and excitement to the event. We look forward to seeing the amazing performances these bands will deliver.”

To add some additional holiday cheer, Shawnee County middle school bands are invited to accompany the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Clause. Participating middle school bands will not be scored.

Ashley Gilfillan, President of Downtown Topeka Inc., expressed her gratitude to KSHSAA and her anticipation for the parade: “Thank you to KSHSAA for making the Miracle on Kansas Avenue Parade an officially approved, rated competition. We are thrilled to introduce students and families from all over Kansas to Downtown Topeka and to what we believe is the best Christmas parade in the Midwest. This event is a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season and showcase the vibrant community spirit of Topeka.”

“We are thrilled to see this year’s Miracle on Kansas Avenue become bigger than ever!” said Austin Taylor, Manager of Customer Operations. “Giant Communications is proud to present this year’s holiday parade in Downtown Topeka.  We look forward to welcoming students from across the state as they showcase their abilities and add to the festivities in Topeka!”

The parade will be televised across northeast Kansas on WIBW-TV Channel 13, ensuring that even those who cannot attend in person can enjoy the spectacle.
