Mulvane Art Museum Invites the Community to Celebrate 100 Years of Art

Celebrating a century of art will be a family affair when Washburn University marks the 100th anniversary of the Mulvane Art Museum. The community is invited to mark the milestone noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7 on the Washburn University campus, 1700 SW College Ave., Topeka, Kan.

Throughout this free event, guests of all ages will be able to tour galleries as well as the Art Lab. Other highlights include live music and entertainment, an outdoor tent filled with artmaking activities, scavenger hunts, live animals, food trucks and birthday cake.

“Washburn is overjoyed to celebrate the Mulvane Art Museum which continues to be a dynamic hub that engages, inspires and builds community through art,” said Dr. JuliAnn Mazachek, president, Washburn University. “From fire performers to family art activities and Navajo sand painting, we have a very special afternoon planned for our Washburn family as well as the community. Please join us.”

The Mulvane Art Museum opened its doors on the Washburn University campus in 1924, becoming one of the first museums west of the Mississippi. Today, it houses more than 6,000 objects from around the world, including paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, photographs and decorative art. While international in scope, the collection focuses on works of artists from Kansas and the Mountain Plains region of the United States.

“This is an exciting time for the Mulvane,” said Connie Gibbons, director, Mulvane Art Museum. “The museum galleries and art lab have been closed for the past year for renovations,  and we are reopening everything just in time for celebrating 100 years of art. There are several new exhibitions throughout seven gallery spaces that highlight artworks from the permanent collection and the Mulvane Art Lab has received a makeover and will be reopening.”

The Mulvane Art Museum is admission free and open to the public Tuesday, noon - 7 p.m.; Wednesday through Friday, noon – 5 p.m.; and Saturday, noon – 4 p.m. Art Lab public hours will be Tuesdays, 4 - 7 p.m. and Saturdays, noon - 4 p.m.
