OMNI Circle Group Launches Kansas-Commerce-Backed Program to Bridge Digital Divide in Topeka's Central Park Neighborhood
Omni Circle Group is establishing a Community Tech Hub to serve Topeka’s Central Park neighborhood, with support from the Kansas Department of Commerce’s Digital Opportunities to Connect Kansans (DOCK) program. Funds granted through the program allow Omni to begin offering free, bilingual digital literacy trainings this month, helping Central Park residents gain essential technology skills needed to thrive in today’s digital world.
More than one in five Central Park households lack internet access, leaving many residents unable to participate in virtual learning, telehealth or remote work. The DOCK grant enables Omni to help change that by providing access to technology, bilingual workshops and relevant digital literacy education.
“Access to digital tools and skills isn’t a luxury in today’s world. Digital literacy is necessary to fully participate in our modern economy,” said Jessica Pauly, Economic Development Director for Omni Circle. “DOCK funding allows us to meet our neighbors where they are, providing practical, hands-on training that empowers Central Park residents to connect, learn and advance in ways that strengthen the entire Topeka community.”
The first free training sessions are open for registration and will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. and Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m. at Omni Circle Group, 1301 S.W. Topeka Blvd. Additional trainings will be offered monthly.
Through its Community Tech Hub, Omni aims to train 200 residents annually in essential digital literacy skills, while connecting at least 50 Spanish-speaking residents each year to bilingual workshops and resources. Technology such as laptops, tablets and computer accessories will be available for participants to rent at no cost.
“Our goal is to help people complete resumes, find better jobs, access online education and receive telehealth services,” Pauly added. “Through this effort, we’re empowering people to improve their lives and the lives of those around them.”
Central Park residents without access to technology—as well as Shawnee County residents receiving SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, veteran’s benefits, disability benefits, or eligible for free/reduced lunch, who are interested in improving their digital comprehension—may register for the trainings by emailing info@omnicircle.org or by calling 785-422-7459. Information about upcoming trainings and events will be made available on Omni’s website and social media platforms.
