Topeka Zoo Mourns the Loss of Beloved Cape Porcupine, Spike

The Topeka Zoo is saddened to announce the passing of Spike, our cherished Cape Porcupine, who lived a remarkable life of 22 years. Spike arrived at the zoo in 2003 and quickly became a favorite among visitors and staff alike.

Born on Valentine's Day, Spike's birthday celebrations were always a highlight of the year. This year's "Feeling 22" themed party, inspired by Taylor Swift's hit song, was a fitting tribute to his remarkable life, which surpassed the median life expectancy for Cape Porcupines by over 7 years.

Spike was known for his unique personality and entertaining eating habits. He delighted in holding food items between his front paws, laying down, and crunching away on his favorite treats. His picky nature kept our dedicated animal care team on their toes, as his preferences changed yearly. Consistent favorites included corn, watermelon, peeled kiwi, and honey.

"Spike will be deeply missed by our team," said Joe Hood, Zookeeper. "His soft vocalizations and enthusiasm for snacks were a joy to experience every morning. I'm grateful to have worked with him for so long."

"Spike's impact on our community and team will not be forgotten," added Wrylie Guffey, Animal Care Director. "His longevity is a testament to the exceptional care provided by our animal and health teams. We've witnessed the dedication and love Spike's team showed him every day."

The Topeka Zoo invites the community to share their favorite memories of Spike on our social media channels. We will miss his charming presence, but we celebrate the joy and wonder he brought to countless visitors during his time with us.
