Tower of Power Performing Prairie Band Casino & Resort on March 26
Oakland soul band Tower of Power is performing live in concert at Prairie Band Casino & Resort on March 26!
For 58 years, Tower of Power has delivered the best in funk and soul music, evolving from their early days as The Motowns into the powerhouse known for defining the “Oakland soul” sound. Breaking through with debut record East Bay Grease, Tower of Power would sign with Warner Bros, releasing sophomore effort Bump City featuring classics “You’re Still a Young Man” and “Down to the Nightclub.” Further releases drove the band to more stardom, with staples such as “So Very Hard to Go” and “What Is Hip?” fueling more interest and radio play for the buzzing soul band. 58 years later, Tower for Power continues to entertain audiences around the world with the same energy that drove them together in 1968. Rotating lineups since their early years, the band still retains saxophonists Emilio Castillo and Stephen Kupka from their original lineup.
“People come up to me all the time and say, ‘Wow man, 50 years! We can't believe it,’” laughs Castillo. “You can't believe it? I'm the one that can't believe it. We've been through a lot of ups and downs and learned a lot along the way.” Long surpassing their modest aspirations, Tower of Power has traveled the world, enjoying hit singles on their own while backing legendary artists including Otis Redding, Elton John, Santana, the Grateful Dead, John Lee Hooker, Aerosmith, Bonnie Raitt, and countless others. In the process, they’ve defined an “Oakland soul” sound as instantly recognizable as those from Castillo’s hometown, Detroit, as well as inspirations like Memphis and Philadelphia.
