Topeka Zoo Wishes A Fond Farewell To African Lion As Part Of Breeding Recommendation

The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center will say farewell to Tatu, its African lion, as he prepares to move to the San Antonio Zoo in early November as part of a breeding recommendation through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP).

The SSP program coordinates breeding recommendations and animal transfers among accredited zoos and aquariums to maintain genetic diversity, support healthy populations and contribute to the long-term sustainability of species in human care.

As an AZA-accredited facility, the Topeka Zoo is committed to following these recommendations and participating in collaborative conservation efforts that support the future of wildlife.

“We know our guests have enjoyed getting to know Tatu, and we’ll certainly miss seeing him here at the Zoo,” said Wrylie Guffey, Animal Care Director. “It’s always hard to say goodbye to an animal we’ve cared for, but we’re excited for what this next chapter holds for him. Being part of the Species Survival Plan allows us to play a role in supporting the future of African lions, and we’re grateful to have shared a part of Tatu’s journey.”

Guests are invited to visit the Zoo during Halloween weekend for an opportunity to see Tatu before his scheduled departure in early November.

The Zoo is also making plans for the arrival of two new lions in the near future. Additional information will be shared as details of the transfer are confirmed.

The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center’s mission is to enrich our community through wildlife conservation and education. Through its participation in the AZA’s Species Survival Plan, the Zoo contributes to coordinated efforts that help ensure a future for wildlife.
