KBA Celebrates America's 250th with Free Pocket Constitutions

In observance of America’s 250th birthday, the Kansas Bar Association (KBA) is hosting a drive-through birthday celebration and handing out commemorative copies of the U.S. Constitution. On Wednesday, July 1st, the public is invited to drive through the KBA auxiliary parking lot located at 1257 SW Harrison Street between 11 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to pick up their free copy. Visitors will receive a pocket-sized U.S. Constitution and a U.S. star sticker. KBA staff will also share information about Kansas Free Legal Answers, an online legal clinic co-hosted by the American Bar Association, and Kansas' merit selection system for appointing Supreme Court justices.

Free Legal Help for Kansans

Kansas Free Legal Answers (https://kansas.freelegalanswers.org/) is available to income eligible Kansans to submit up to three questions per year and have them answered by an attorney volunteer. Kansas is one of 42 states and territories participating in the national ABA Free Legal Answers program. Attorneys provide answers on a range of legal topics, including family law, housing, consumer rights, employment/unemployment, and civil rights.

Celebrating an Independent Judiciary

As part of the 250th anniversary of our nation's founding, the KBA will recognize its longstanding support for Kansas' merit selection system for appointing Kansas Supreme Court justices. This milestone provides an opportunity to celebrate the vital role of an impartial judiciary in preserving the rule of law and maintaining the constitutional balance among our three co-equal branches of government. Selecting justices based on qualifications, integrity, and professional excellence rather than political considerations, helps ensure that the Kansas Supreme Court remains fair, independent, and committed to equal justice under the law.

Those interested in learning more about Kansas courts, the merit selection process, and KBA judicial retention surveys are encouraged to visit www.YourKansasJudges.org. Kansas Free Legal Answers and Your Kansas Judges are made possible by grants from the Kansas Bar Foundation.
