Washburn Tech Names New Dean

Topeka, Kan. – Gary Bayens has been named dean of the Washburn University Institute of Technology (Washburn Tech). Bayens has served as interim dean since July 2019 and will now lead Washburn Tech on a permanent basis.

“Dr. Bayens epitomizes the high level of leadership excellence that is a hallmark of Washburn University. He is the appropriate person to guide the growth of technical education in Northeast Kansas,” said Jerry Farley, president, Washburn University.

“In his short time at Washburn Tech, Dr. Bayens has shown great leadership and insight for technical education and the workforce needs of our community,” said JuliAnn Mazachek, vice president for academic affairs, Washburn University. “We are grateful for his willingness to guide Washburn Tech and continue the outstanding work of its administrators, instructors and staff.”

Prior to serving as interim dean of Washburn Tech, Bayens was associate dean of applied studies at Washburn University. He worked to guide, direct and oversee the school's educational programs.

Bayens earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Washburn University, a master’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Alabama and a doctorate in criminal justice with interdisciplinary study in political science from The Union Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has more than 25 years of classroom experience in traditional, online and blended learning environments.

“I am thrilled to lead the team at Washburn Tech on a permanent basis,” Bayens said. “So many exciting opportunities and community collaborations are on the horizon. We have every intention of continuing our role as a national innovator in the field of technical education.”

Bayens replaces Clark Coco, who retired as dean of Washburn Tech at the end of June 2019.
