Evergy Green Team celebrates 30 years of environmental stewardship
TOPEKA, Kan., Sept. 28, 2019. The Green Team completes an average of 60 environmental projects each year, on evenings and weekends. They collaborate with conservation groups, agencies and schools to enhance and foster an understanding of our environment. Up to 600 employees, retirees and their families volunteer annually.
The group was founded in 1989 by a Westar Energy employee. The team primarily completed projects in Kansas but expanded its focus to include Missouri after the merger.
“Our 30th anniversary marks an exciting milestone for us as we become the Evergy Green Team. We are looking forward to completing more projects in our growing service area,” said Ben Postlethwait, manager of biology, conservation and sustainability programs. “Thank you to our volunteers, our company and our community partners for the overwhelming support over the years.”
The Green Team has completed thousands of projects, restored thousands of acres of native grasses, developed hundreds of acres of precious wetlands, planted more than 30,000 trees and has been instrumental in opening and improving hundreds of miles of trails.
