20 Under 40: Abbey Brown

Abbey manages The Brownstone, a wedding and event venue in North Topeka, and launched the Milestone Market, a wedding boutique, in March of this year. In both of these roles, Abbey focuses on celebrating the community and bringing people together.  

“Events, especially weddings can bring about many emotions. I pride myself on being the voice of reason and the calm that these families need.” 

Empathy and connecting with others drive Abbey’s community involvement. She serves as a mentor for the Kansas State University Entrepreneurship Department as well as teaching a Junior Achievement class at Seaman Middle School. As an entrepreneur she connects with other local business owners through the Topeka Independent Business Association, where she serves as the vice chair, as well as through Limitless: Empowered Women Business Owners. 

Whether in her business adventures or through her community involvement, Abbey lives by the motto, “If serving is beneath you, then leadership is beyond you.” 

What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done?

Every year, my husband and I go on an adventure date with another couple. These adventure dates have been my most spontaneous trips because we always end up doing activities that push us outside our comfort zones. Some example trips include dog sledding, skydiving and rock climbing. 

What frustrates you the most about the world? 

I believe that the world is full of brave humans pushing the boundaries that have previously been set in society and business. The world needs a bit more grace, kindness and humility for those who are breaking barriers, putting themselves out there and truly trying to make a difference. 

What characteristic do you think most people notice about you? 

I believe that most people notice that I am always focused on future goals, plans and dreams. I am also dedicated to the work I love and the team that works alongside me.

What characteristic do you value the most in your coworkers? 

I strive to surround myself with honest and hardworking associates. We work in a high energy and fast paced environment which means that the folks working events need a level head and a whole lot of passion!
