Second phase of public engagement kicks off for Family Park

Second phase of public engagement kicks off for Family Park

The second phase of public engagement for the planning of Family Park is now underway. Zach Snethen, principal at HTK Architects this morning shared with county commissioners three concepts for the park. Via a survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FamilyParkConcepts the public will be asked to vote on their favorite concept.

Family Park is located in the 2200 block of SW Urish Road. HTK has partnered with Cook, Flatt and Strobel engineers and Landworks Studio of Olathe to assist in developing the plan.

“A critical component of the planning process is gathering public and stakeholder input concerning potential passive and active recreational opportunities in Family Park,” said Snethen.

Family Park is set to become a destination park, similar to Gage Park and Lake Shawnee, each of which draw more than 1 million visitors per year. Parks and recreation growth has also not kept pace with the fast growing southwest area of Shawnee county.

“While we work to maintain the park and recreation assets we presently manage, we must also provide recreational opportunities to the growing areas of our community,” said Tim Laurent, SCP+R director.

The new survey seeks further input on the types of amenities and features the public would like to see in the park. A final plan, project budget and implementation strategies will be considered in early December.
