What have you learned since you were selected?

The parameters of leadership are situational. There are times in life where you will need to be a leader in your family rather than in your community or work. Other times, it may mean sacrificing your family or personal life to be a leader in the community or at your work. Be observant. Effective leadership comes from recognizing need, no matter how big or small, and rising to the occasion to address it.

What do you know now that you wish you knew then?

That it's okay to establish your own definition of success and leadership. Shortly after being named a member of the 2018 Class of Topeka's Top 20 Under 40, I left a promising corporate external affair position to return to public service. Although the job was rewarding and offered ample opportunities for future growth and promotion, I was on autopilot, felt like something was missing and was craving more. Others thought it was crazy to leave such a job, but the decision is one I don't regret.

What advice would you give to aspiring young professionals?

Set boundaries. As a leader, you will be presented with ample opportunities to be involved. Frankly, the opportunities will be greater than what you can realistically do. Determine your personal and professional priorities, establish your goals, set your boundaries to align with your priorities, and then stick to it.
