Barbara Duncan: Leadership Greater Topeka
TK: What motivates or inspires you?
I am motivated by a desire to help others and create a secure and fulfilling life for my family.
TK: What was your first job and what did you learn from it?
My first job was at Dairy Queen when I was 15. It taught me about responsibility and working with others, as well as how to properly get the curl on top of an ice cream cone!
TK: Best advice you have received?
When dealing with new challenges that start to feel overwhelming, I remember my mother saying “How hard can it be?” That was her attitude when jumping into a new project or commitment – if it was something she believed in, she would just dive into it.
TK: What have you gained from being a part of Leadership Greater Topeka?
I’ve gained a greater knowledge of Topeka and its strengths as well as where we still need improvement. I have also made connections that allow me to have more meaningful involvement in the community.
TK: How has the current situation impacted your thoughts on leadership? The current situation has served as a good reminder that leaders need to show confidence in their role and organization while also listening to others. Making sure all are heard, concerns are listened to, and solutions are found is very important.
TK: What will you do differently after the pandemic? We have all learned how we are able to adapt as well as processes that can be done differently. I plan to look at what worked well and what needs improvement before we potentially have a similar situation again.
