TK Staff Profile: Kathy Webber

I have been writing for TK Magazine for( I think) five years. (You guys would know). I am originally from Overland Park but I have been living in Topeka for 24 years. In addition to writing for TK Magazine, I am a fitness instructor for Genesis Health Clubs and Crunch Fitness here in Topeka. I have three children, three dogs, and have been married for 24 years. I love camping, hiking, and spending time with family.

What do you think makes a good story?

I love to write for TK Magazine because I can meet a wide variety of people. Each time I write a story I grow as a person. To me, a good story is an easy read where you gain insight and are inspired by another's story. It's especially encouraging to me to listen to people's stories, their struggles, their histories, and the how come behind every new small business I interview. One of my favorite stories I wrote was about Taj Ma Dog. The struggles the owners had in the beginning and how they overcame those oppositions inspired me to keep up the good fight and not give up so quickly when I am struggling with something.

When you have a 'writer's' block or can't seem to find the words what do you do?

I usually don't get writer's block but if I do I go on Facebook, or search the internet for more information about whom I am writing. Sometimes the hardest thing is just knowing how to start the article, then to me, it just begins to flow.

What are you currently reading?

Right now I am reading "Whiter Than Snow" by Sandra Dallas. I love historical fiction and Dallas does an amazing job at that.

What is the most exciting thing you have witnessed in business in Topeka in the past few years?

I am not a Topeka native, I grew up in Overland Park. One of the things I noticed about Topeka that makes us stand out is how supportive we are of each other. Topeka cares about its community and supports small businesses. A common thing I hear from small business owners is just how amazed they are of the support they receive from our chamber of commerce, local banks, contractors, and just the common customer. I'm proud to be a Topekan because here we help others make their dreams come true.
