A statement from Washburn University about recent events

A statement from Washburn University about recent events

Washburn University President Jerry Farley issued the following statement today:

Washburn University began as an educational institution that welcomed all students. Our founders understood the importance and value of multiple points of view from all people. Now more than ever, it is imperative we continue to build upon these founding values.

The incidents over the past few weeks involving violence toward African American men and women in our country are devastating. I am disheartened by what has happened to Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Christian Cooper and George Floyd. While these incidents did not happen at Washburn, we know that many in our community are impacted, not just by recent events but by years of racism and injustice across our country.

Our students, faculty and staff come from all walks of life and we are committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect in our communities.

Acts of racism and violence, no matter the target, contradict the values of Washburn University. We must recognize the need to continue to evolve and find ways to do better, individually and collectively, in ensuring we make this a campus of inclusion.

Those who have been impacted by recent events are encouraged to contact Student Life 785-670-2100 or Counseling Services 785-670-3100. For resources, see www.washburn.edu/diversity or email diversity.inclusion@washburn.edu  During this difficult time, we must find ways to work together and show one another empathy and kindness.
