What inspires you?

Like many of us, my personal journey had an over-abundance of difficult struggles that molded who I was as an adult, bringing out my strength and determination. As a child, I lacked the self-esteem and assurance that was necessary for me to really thrive as an individual. Ironically, growing up through the 90’s, I often noticed the same thing of our city; struggling to make an identity for itself, surrounded by crime, decades of Phelps, and a history of racial indifference's that we couldn’t seem to get through. In order to grow we needed an environment conducive to growth. We needed change. I really felt the need to be a part of that change when I decided that Topeka was where I was going to raise my family, grow my roots, and be a part of something better. I wanted my children to grow-up in a city that was growing around them, while also seeing the importance of being a positive support system for others within their community. I knew that in order to make that happen I had to be a part of that change that I wanted to see.

What advice do you have for others?

I tend to live life by two very important quotes; the first one is pretty self-explanatory, "Pick your battles". The second one is relevant for staying on track, "What's holding you back is the thought that something is holding you back." We can be our own worst enemy at times, battling with ourselves and coming up with a dozen excuses as to why something won't work. I try to encourage others to view situations with different perspectives, instead of focusing on the reason's why, try the why-not's.

What is the greatest lesson you have learned on your journey?

Over the years I've been blessed to mentor and work along side with hundreds of small business owners, in the Early Childcare Education field and also in the Arts community; helping build relationships, teaching tools for success, molding and building them up as other leaders within the community. I have learned how valuable I am as a leader within my community, and that I have the ability to inspire and encourages others to believe they are just as capable.

What does your vision for our community look like?

The future looks bright for Topeka, and I'm so excited to be a part of that! We have some amazing individuals who are transforming our community and it's definitely showing. My hope is that Topeka will continue to shine on, becoming an example to other cities - showing that passion, hard work, and dedication can be the catalyst for positive change.

What does "Equal - Powerful - Unstoppable" mean to you?

As an individual, I know my value and what I'm capable of, and I know that my influence can only change the world a little. However, together we can be force that must be heard, together we are stronger, and together we show each other that everyone's voice matters. It's not just about me, or you, it's about US.
