What inspires you?

I have been working with historically undeserved populations for nearly 15 years. I also have a son with Autism. Seeing what people can accomplish despite insurmountable odds motivates me. The fire that burns inside them to chase their dreams fans my flames and keeps me going, even on the hardest days.

What advice do you have for others?

Know your capacity. Creating change is not a one person job so don't feel like you have to do it all, all the time. It takes everyone contributing what they are able to move the needle forward. Do what you can to the best of your ability and know that when combined with the work of those around you, you will make a real difference.

What is the greatest lesson you have learned on your journey?

Listen first. Then act. It is easy to see a situation you want to improve and jump right in to fix it. Oftentimes, that turns out to not be very helpful. It is best to listen and understand the need and get an idea of potential solutions from those experiencing the issue. This way you are providing the most effective and efficient support while building and maintaining trust,

What does your vision for our community look like?

I love Topeka. I believe in this community and its potential. I want Topeka to be a place where people of all backgrounds, races, ethnicities, identities, abilities, and talents are accepted, safe, supported, and celebrated.

What does "Equal - Powerful - Unstoppable" mean to you?

We people feel equal within their community nothing is impossible. When we give power to everyone, every voice, that is when we create real and lasting positive change.
