Let’s face it, 2020 was a challenge. We spent the majority of it worried, frustrated, angry and a little shell shocked. We watched small businesses close their doors as others are still struggling to survive.

But we also learned a lot of things about ourselves last year. We learned we are tougher than we thought. We learned that some things can’t be controlled. We learned that we are stronger together. But most of all, we learned that with a little courage and a lot of heart, we can throw “normal” out the window because ingenuity is about creating success when the world is turned upside down.

Looking through this issue of TK Business Magazine, I was struck by the number of micro- business entrepreneurs and startup businesses that are making a name for themselves here in Topeka.

Rather than look at 2020 as a glass half empty, many of these individuals saw an opportunity to create their own parameters for how to grow a business. Whether that means creating shared spaces for like-minded entrepreneurs to showcase their products, or bringing the brake repair shop to your house, local businesses are throwing the traditional business models out the window.

And it is working for them. With flexible hours and creative use of space, these micro- entrepreneurs can grow their businesses at a pace and on a budget that works for them, allowing them to act on their dreams now, rather than waiting for all of the pieces to fall into place.

It takes guts to start a business at any point in time, but it takes a little crazy and a lot of faith to do it when the world seems to be at a standstill. If so much positive can come out of 2020, just imagine what 2021 may hold.
