TK: What inspires you?

SHERRI: I am inspired by truth and righteousness. I look for it in everything and everyone I meet and cherish it wherever I find it.

TK: What have you learned about yourself through the challenges of the past year and a half?

SHERRI: I have learned that I am more vulnerable than I thought and I am stronger than I thought. While the pandemic has torn through our families and our communities, it has also brought us closer together. I have found that I can handle more adversity - one day at a time - than I ever imagined I could.

TK: How do you take care of yourself?

SHERRI: I nurture my inner spirit by listening to the quiet; taking time to love myself mentally, by reading good books and literature; spiritually by following in my divine voice; and physically by resting, eating well and caring for my body. The best part of caring for myself is sharing these things with others.

TK: What is the best advice you've ever been given? Or what advice do you have for others?

SHERRI: When you are feeling your worst, take care of yourself, dress up, do your hair and makeup to make you look your best. It will make you feel better.

TK: What is your vision for our community? Has it changed through the pandemic and racial justice reckoning of 2020?

SHERRI: My vision for our community begins with unity. I believe we can unite around a common goal to embrace our common heritage that allows the world to see us as an example of what can happen when people come together. I believe that because we are the home of Brown vs Board, we can set an example for the nation and the world of what can happen when we recognize and operate in our truth. That we can value each other through our differences to reach a common goal.

TK: The mission of YWCA is to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. What does YWCA's mission mean to you?

SHERRI: I appreciate the mission of YWCA. It mirrors my own mission to use my talents to create a world that allows us all to feel we belong and can thrive with freedom and dignity.

The YWCA is on a mission to empower women at all stages in their careers. Diversity in leadership is particularly vital to our vibrant business community in the Greater Topeka Area.
