Q&A with Jolee Spencer, owner of The Northwoods Gnomes

Q. Why did you decide to call your business "The Northwood Gnomes"?
My family has always lived "north of the river" here in Topeka and I wanted to somehow incorporate that into the name. Paired with the Nordic Gnome style, which derives from the northern parts of the regions, it seemed like the perfect combination.

Q. How long have you been in business?
This all started from having a pop-up booth at Topeka Vendors Market in Nov 2020. I was going to create wood bead garlands, home decor, etc. and on a whim I thought....I suppose I could create some gnomes to have in the booth, too! I would have never guessed a year later I would have created over 1,000 gnomes and been able to create such a fulfilling business from it.

Q. Your gnomes are adorable! Do you carry anything else in your booth?
Yes, I do! In addition to my handcrafted gnomes, I also create coordinating pieces seasonally. For instance, pumpkins & Christmas trees. I also have a variety of home decor items....from antiques to modern designs. I have always loved a mixture of design styles and being able to repurpose items. You never know what you might find in my booth!

Q. Do you take requests for special order gnomes?
I love creating new designs and being able to try something new. I have created a WIDE variety of gnome themes including Characters, Sports teams, Professions, Hobbies, Holidays and more! A few examples are: Military, Teacher & Local High Schools. Customers may send requests per email or DM on Facebook and pick them up at Topeka Vendors Market!
