Primary Care Physician Freddy Cooper, M.D., Joins Stormont Vail Health

Stormont Vail Health announced that Freddy Cooper, M.D., has joined our medical team and will practice as a primary care physician specializing in Outpatient Internal Medicine at 901 Garfield Ave, Topeka, Kan., 66606.

Dr. Cooper has spent time all over the world and credits his background to who he is today. He was born in Mumbai, India where he completed most of his schooling before moving to the U.S. for his residency. He moved to Florida for his Internal Medicine residency and has also spent time at a few hospitals in North Carolina, Ohio, and Georgia working in specialized departments.

“I’ve gotten the best of both cultures and that matches my personality today,” said Dr. Cooper. “My parents are my number one inspiration who still live in India. Seeing them work so hard and making all the sacrifices that they did for me to be a physician is what inspires me.”

Dr. Cooper uses that inspiration when approaching medicine and his type of care. He believes listening is the most important aspect of patient care. Dr. Cooper says having a patient-centric approach to medicine is how he builds trust with his patients and is how patients can feel comfortable being open and honest about what is going on in their life.

“Most of how you will practice is about what you hear from the patient. Just by listening to the patient and understanding concerns, giving empathy, showing empathy, and just making sure that someone is listening to them to help guide decisions is about 90% of what I believe my job is.”

Dr. Cooper says making a difference in the community by helping people with their health care needs, talking with people, and understanding and sharing other people’s experiences is the best part of his job.

Outside of work, Dr. Cooper is a bibliophile. He enjoys collecting books and has an extensive collection of fine and rare books. He also likes collecting tea and will have friends over for a tea party using his eclectic selection. When he isn’t collecting, he enjoys playing card games like rummy and Bridge so he can interact with others.

Freddy Cooper, M.D. attended Seth SG Medical College in Mumbai, India before going to Memorial Healthcare System in Florida for his residency in Internal Medicine. Dr. Cooper was a resident representative on the Graduate Medical Education Committee and has since become the head of the committee. He also received distinction in Pharmacology, Pediatrics, Biochemistry, and Ophthalmology while in medical school.

“I define success by patient satisfaction and patient health. If all of my patients are happy and satisfied with the care they’re receiving and they’re living healthy, that’s success for me. That’s what I measure success on.”
