Local healthcare organization donates more than $4,000 to the American Cancer Society

Kansas Medical Clinic, P.A. announced today a donation of $4,196 to the American Cancer Society of Kansas to help support the fight against colon cancer.

KMC’s annual Strollin’ for the Colon 5K Run/Walk event was designed to create awareness about colorectal cancer and to encourage those with risk factors to get screened.
The new screening guideline from the American Cancer Society lowered the age that it recommends people at average risk to begin screening, from 50 to 45. Colonoscopy has been the gold standard of screening tests for colon cancer for three decades now. Screening saves lives by preventing cancer and finding cancers early. In fact, 90 percent of colon cancers are preventable with a screening such as a colonoscopy.

Some more facts on colon cancer:

  • Colorectal cancer is the second most common leading cause of cancer related deaths and the third most diagnosed cancer in the US.

  • The American Cancer Society estimates a diagnosis of about 151,030 new cases of colorectal cancers in the year 2022.

  • People with a first-degree relative (parent, sibling, or offspring) with colon cancer have two to three times the risk of developing the disease.

  • The number one symptom of colon cancer is no symptom at all.

  • 41% of Americans say they’ve delayed or avoided seeking care due to concerns over COVID-19.

  • The 90% 5-year survival rate for colon cancer falls to just 14% after it spreads.
