Melissa Bylsma | YWCA Women of Excellence Honoree
What inspires you to get up and do the work?
I'm always inspired by those around me. Whether at work, church, or just out in the community, people are doing amazing things every day. I want my kids to grow up and see people working together and taking care of one another, so if I can be a small part of that, I'm going to do what I can.
What have you learned about yourself through the challenges you have overcome?
I've learned that I'm capable of more than I think I am. Any time I'm presented with a challenge that pushes me out of my comfort zone, I always try to give it a go. It may go really well or really poorly, but whatever happens, I'm going to gain something from trying or at the very least learn something about myself.
How do you take care of yourself?
I try my best to take some time out for myself every day. I have a two-year-old and an eight-month-old, so naps are a coveted treat right now. If I have time, I have a myriad of hobbies in my rotation like baking, attempting to garden, sewing, and playing games.
What is the best advice you've ever been given? Or what advice do you have for others?
Don't worry so much about what other people think of you. What matters most is what you think of yourself.
What is your vision for our community? Has it changed through the pandemic and racial justice reckoning of recent years?
My vision hasn't changed. I want a vibrant community that celebrates its diversity and differences, supports one another, lends a helping hand where needed, and is a safe place for all.
The mission of YWCA is to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. What does YWCA's mission mean to you?
It gives me hope for our future. My community vision would not be possible without organizations like the YWCA. Together, our voices will be heard, and we can impact change.
