John “Rob” Miller, M.D., Joins Stormont Vail Health Emergency Department

Stormont Vail Health proudly announces that John “Rob” Miller, M.D., has joined our Emergency Department team.

Dr. Miller was born in Hawaii but grew up in many places around the U.S., including San Diego and Colorado. His experience as a military child instilled an appreciation for interpersonal connection, which plays a prominent role in his work as an emergency department physician.

Dr. Miller developed a curiosity for science at a young age. This interest continued through college, where he pursued an undergraduate degree in Biology from Bethany College. He obtained his pre-med degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, where his passion for medicine matured after meeting people who were doctors.

“For me, the main draw was seeing doctors walk the line between talking to and connecting with people while also engaging with science,” Dr. Miller said. “It’s about being a thoughtful person who really knows the depth of science so they can help heal people.”

Dr. Miller took that passion for people, connection, and science with him when he enrolled at the University of Kansas Emergency Medicine Residency. Upon becoming a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, he sought his Emergency Medicine board certification.

Dr. Miller’s favorite part about emergency medicine is helping patients when they arrive at one of the lowest points of their health. Working in the Emergency Department allows him to get to know his patients and pinpoint the best course of action according to individual needs and concerns.

“The most satisfying part of my job is seeing people at their worst and turning things around for them. That’s the privilege and challenge of my job; trying to get to the bottom of what’s going on and finding out somebody’s in a bad spot, then finding the right medicine or procedure that turns them around.”

Dr. Miller comes to Stormont Vail from Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas, where he worked as Chief Designate of Medical Staff. Previously, Dr. Miller was the Medical Director of the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital Emergency Department. He also worked as an Emergency Department physician and Medical Director at Hays Medical Center Emergency Department. Dr. Miller’s unique experience as an emergency physician and former hospital administrator strongly influence his approach to patient care.

“I want patients to know they’ll be well-taken care of if they see me. I do my best to get to know them and help them throughout their journey. It’s something that I take seriously and stress about even when I’m not at work. So I want them to know I’m working hard to be the best I can be for them.”
