The Beacon’s building, designed by renowned architect Frank C. Squires, first opened its doors to the Topeka Woman’s Club in 1925. The club, which formed as a collective of women’s organizations dedicated to philanthropy, education and social engagement, celebrated the building’s cornerstone laying on April 26, 1924. This historic structure was later transformed into office spaces for the Kansas Insurance Department in 1980 before becoming The Beacon in 2021.
Recognized for its architectural and historical significance, the building was listed on the Register of Kansas Historic Places in 1979 and on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It has since been a beacon of celebration and community gatherings.
In honor of the building’s centennial, The Beacon will host a series of festive events throughout the year. The celebrations kick off with a glamorous Jazz Age-themed New Year’s Eve party, promising an unforgettable evening of revelry and nostalgia.
