New Garden Sculpture Unveiled at the Zoo: A Tribute to Family, Art, and Legacy
The Topeka Zoo is delighted to announce the unveiling of a new garden sculpture, “Picnic Garden Sculpture,” a generous gift from the Kay McFarland Charitable Trust. This evocative piece is the latest creation of renowned contemporary artist Joyce Steinfeld, and it will be officially dedicated on Sunday, September 15th, with a special ceremony beginning at 6:50 pm.
Joyce Steinfeld, a celebrated artist known for her dynamic and emotionally resonant works, has crafted a sculpture that beautifully captures a poignant family scene. At its heart, the sculpture depicts a Sunday afternoon picnic featuring a young Kay McFarland interacting with her pet rabbit, alongside her older brother who shares a unique connection with birds. This intimate portrayal reflects the foundational support and love that have significantly shaped Kay McFarland’s remarkable life and career.
Kay McFarland, the first woman to graduate from her law school, the first female judge in her county, and ultimately the first woman to serve as Chief Justice of the Kansas Supreme Court, is honored through this artwork. Her achievements are deeply rooted in the strong, nurturing family environment that the sculpture so lovingly represents. The McFarland family’s passion for nature and animals is also symbolically reflected in the surrounding flowers, which highlight their love for the natural world.
Joyce Steinfeld’s artwork is celebrated for its innovative blend of traditional techniques and modern sensibilities. Her pieces often explore themes of abstraction and emotion, creating dynamic forms that evoke a sense of movement and depth. Steinfeld’s “Language Art” series, which incorporates words in various languages, embodies her commitment to fostering connections and encouraging personal and cultural well-being.
The dedication ceremony will take place as follows:
6:30 pm: Turtle gate opens, and guests begin to gather at the venue.
