Washburn Tech celebrates recruits at 13th annual National Technical Letter of Intent Signing Day
Washburn University Institute of Technology (Washburn Tech) welcomes its new recruiting class at the 2026 National Technical Letter of Intent Signing Day at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, April 16, in the Conference Center at 5724 SW Huntoon St. Similar to an athletic signing, incoming students will sign a letter of intent to attend Washburn Tech in the fall.
This national event, sponsored by the National Coalition of Certification Centers (NC3), mirrors the NCAA’s National Signing Day for athletes who commit to play sports in college. It is designed to honor students who are entering a technical field and to celebrate the dignity of work. More than 80 technical institutions across the country will be hosting signing day ceremonies this spring. Washburn Tech hosted the first signing day 13 years ago.
“We are thrilled to welcome new students and their families to Washburn Tech this week,” said Scott Smathers, Dean, Washburn Tech. “National Signing Day marks the beginning of an exciting educational journey and highlights the value of technical education. It’s inspiring to watch students celebrate their commitment to pursuing high‑wage, high‑demand careers that will strengthen the skilled workforce across Kansas and the nation.”
In addition to student signings, the event will include addresses from Washburn leadership, as well as congratulatory messages from area business and industry leaders. A live stream of the event can be watched on Washburn Tech’s YouTube channel.
Washburn Tech offers more than 30 career programs in one of the following divisions: Construction, Design and Technology, Health Occupations, Hospitality and Human Services, Manufacturing and Transportation. Serving both high school and adult students, Washburn Tech is recognized as a leader in career and technical education.
