Party for the Planet: Earth Day Celebration Scheduled at Topeka Zoo for April 18th

The Topeka Zoo will celebrate Earth Day with its annual Party for the Planet presented by Club Car Wash on Saturday, April 18, offering a full day of activities from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. focused on environmental awareness, hands-on experiences, and ways the community can help protect the planet.

More than thirty community organizations and agencies will join the zoo for Party for the Planet, working together to promote awareness and appreciation for Earth and its diverse ecosystems. Guests can also participate in hands-on activities and create take-home crafts such as seed bombs, edible Earths, and “toad abodes.”

This year’s theme centers on art as a tool for conservation awareness. Guests may notice a new mural on the wall facing the zoo’s main parking lot. The mural was created by aerosol artist Abstract Dissent and generously supported by the Rotary Club of Topeka. The piece highlights the impact of plastic pollution on North America’s waterways and the species that depend on them.

Additional artwork by local artist Tracy Leonard has been installed inside the Animals & Man building, complementing new displays focused on recycling and ways individuals can support wildlife in their own backyard.

Artwork and writing submitted as part of the zoo’s annual Earth Day Art & Writing Contest will also be on display inside the Gary K. Clarke Education Center.

Party for the Planet is included with general zoo admission and is free for Friends of the Topeka Zoo members.
