A new beauty aesthetic and unbridled greed in a dystopian future set the stage for Zombie Beauty Pageant. In a world where nothing is as it seems, flattery will get you everywhere—and one misstep can be fatal.
Saturday, April 2 at 8:00 pm, the new feature-length “dramedy” film will premier at the Historic Jayhawk State Theatre.
“In the dark alternative future of Zombie Beauty Pageant - Drop. Dead. Gorgeous. you'll find disquieting echoes from our current style-obsessed culture where entertainment and what's hot today take a disturbing twist,” said Gary Piland, who wrote the screenplay, produced, directed and edited the film. “Beauty and reality are truly in the eye of the beholder."
Zombie Beauty Pageant is Roaring Rat Films' fourth production. The first three films are shorts also in the zombie genre. “This film is by far our most ambitious with a cast including extras of over fifty actors.” said Piland. “I’m amazed at the vast amount of local acting and production talent we have here in Topeka. It made casting, planning and production an incredible experience.”
Piland is well-known to be a fan of redevelopment efforts in Downtown Topeka, so when it came time to find a venue for the premier, the Jayhawk Theatre was a logical choice.
“There couldn’t be a better entertainment venue in Topeka for an April Ghouls Zombie Beauty Pageant film screening event,” said Jeff Carson, president of the Jayhawk Theatre Board of Directors. “I hope everyone comes out for this fundraiser for the Jayhawk Theatre. It’s going to be a blast!”
Carson said the Jayhawk Theatre is proud to host this great event. “The opportunity to screen Zombie Beauty Pageant is a glimpse into future of the Jayhawk Theatre as a unique entertainment venue. Our volunteer board is excited to get the restoration started and fundraisers like these are key to our success.”
An admission price of $10 will be donated back to the theatre to aid in its preservation efforts. Doors will open at 7:00 pm, with movie showing at 8:00 pm.
