Westar Energy will be all green, all day for St. Patrick’s Day.
“We are committed to providing clean, reliable energy to our customers. To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we’ll meet all of our customers’ electricity needs with green energy,” said Mark Ruelle, president and chief executive officer. “We already produce a significant amount of energy from the wind. By the end of this year, about one third of our residential and small business customers’ energy will come from green power, produced in Kansas by Kansans.”
Customers will use about 17,500 megawatt-hours of electricity on St. Patrick’s Day. Kansas’ March winds will provide a good portion of that energy, and Westar will use renewable energy credits to fill in any gap.
While Westar will go 100 percent green on St. Patrick’s Day, Westar customers have that choice every day through a program called Westar Wind. With it they can choose any additional percentage of their electricity to be renewable. For the average household, choosing to have their electricity fully provided by wind energy costs about an extra $2.50 per month.
