TK: What was your first job and what did you learn from it?

My first job was at Harry's IGA.  My store manager's philosophy was that we were a family; acknowledging that we spend more waking hours with our co-workers than our families.  Having disagreements is fine, but to always treat each other with respect and kindness.

TK: Best advice you have received?

Sometimes nothing is a wise thing to say.

TK: What is your theme song?

Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson. It's a song that has always struck a chord with me and a song I listened to with my kids.  If you want to make a change in the world, the first step is to make that change with yourself first.

TK: How has the current situation impacted your thoughts on leadership?

The COVID-19 pandemic has allowed great leaders to step forward and shine.  They were placed in a situation where they had to utilize their leadership skills by making tough decisions and the knowledge of the impacts of those decisions.  Clear communication and empathy have been the cornerstones of those leaders.  Unfortunately, the pandemic has also displayed examples of weaker leadership – through a lack of communication, a lack of planning, confusing communication and the inability to see the impacts on others of their decisions.

TK: What will you do differently after the pandemic?

I hope we are able to retain some of the benefits or “silver linings” that were discovered during the pandemic.  By being forced to re-think procedures and practices to allow for many of the workforce to work remotely, I think many have found some efficiencies that I hope are retained after returning to our office workplace.  I also will take a little extra time to enjoy the camaraderie of the workplace, time spent with friends and family, as well making sure to keep our COOP plans up to date for ALL scenarios.
