Topeka Habitat for Humanity Celebrates International Women Build Week

(Topeka, KS) Topeka Habitat for Humanity in celebration with Lowe’s continues to celebrate International Women Build Week. Media are invited to Media Day, celebrating local community leaders and celebrities and shining a spotlight on the importance of women joining in the construction efforts, as well as the housing issues facing women and their families. The Community Leader and Celebrity Build shift will be held from 9am to noon on Thursday, March 5, 2020. The build site is located at 2630 SW Buchanan Street – the site of Topeka Habitat for Humanity’s 109th new construction build in the community.

“International Women Build week allows us to celebrate the power of women all around the globe, as our National partner is facilitating events with Lowe’s on 235 communities in the United States, India and Canada,” said Janice Watkins, CEO, Topeka Habitat for Humanity. “Locally, we will welcome over 100 women on our build site and through our organization over seven days, encouraging women to support one another, embracing women on our construction sites and allowing our voices to collectively be heard to advocate for safe and affordable housing issues that inequitably impact women.”

The Community Leader and Celebrity Build is a mid-week celebration of Women Build Week and the week will continue to commence with City of Topeka women employees joining the efforts from 9am – 3pm on Friday, March 6th and concluding the week with Community Build days on Saturday, March 7th from 9am – 3pm and from 1-4pm on Sunday, March 8th.

“I am so blessed that so many women are dedicating their week to making significant progress on the building of my home,” said Amy Carpenter, future Topeka Habitat for Humanity homeowner. “This is an incredible experience to see all of the different veins of our community working alongside each other to build not only a home, but our community.”

Since 2003, Lowe’s has partnered with Habitat for Humanity, committing more than $71.1 million dollars to support the efforts of the organization, impacting the lives of Habitat homeowners worldwide and building and repairing more than 5,325 homes with the support of more than 138,000 women volunteers.
