Washburn Tech students earn medals in SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference
Four Washburn University Institute of Technology (Washburn Tech) students showcased their abilities to win bronze and silver medals in the national SkillsUSA competition.
Winners are:
Trysten Botts, of Topeka: bronze, Collision Damage Appraisal.
Colby Figge, of Meriden: silver, Collision Repair Technology.
Drew Nelson, of Gardner: silver, Technical Computer Applications.
Amanda Schultz, of Topeka: bronze, Nail Care.
To compete at the national level, students are required to have earned a gold medal in the state SkillsUSA competition. In keeping with pandemic protocols, the contests were conducted virtually, with competitors using equipment and facilities at their school and judges participated via real-time in interviews and presentations.
The philosophy of the national championships is to reward students for excellence, to involve industry in directly evaluating student performance and to keep training relevant to employers’ needs.
SkillsUSA improves the quality of America’s skilled workforce through a structured program of citizenship, leadership, employability, technical and professional skills training. The organization also enhances the lives and careers of students, instructors and industry representatives as they strive to be champions at work. The organization has 13,000 school chapters in 54 state and territorial associations.
