Phelica Glass | YWCA Women of Excellence
TK: What inspires you?
PHELICA: I am inspired by challenge and growth. Where there is a challenge there is potential for growth.
TK: What have you learned about yourself through the challenges of the past year and a half?
PHELICA: Whew what a challenging year. I have learned that I am armadillo and a lion. I am armed with knowledge to protect self and others. Like a lion I am aggressive yet dependable. My aggressiveness gets things done, and people can count on me to do what I say.
TK: How do you take care of yourself?
PHELICA: I am a firm believer in protected me time. I schedule time for restoration. In that time, I shop, have spa days and spend time with people whom I have a nurturing relationship with.
TK: What is the best advice you've ever been given? Or what advice do you have for others?
PHELICA: "Just say no, you are not doing that". I often tell others, maintaining personal boundaries is the key a balanced life.
TK: What is your vision for our community? Has it changed through the pandemic and racial justice reckoning of 2020?
PHELICA: My vision for the city of Topeka is to live in a community free of all forms of violence. Gun violence, domestic violence and systematic racism overshadow the greatness of our city. If we indivually assess an address our personal issues, we can change the world one person at a time.
TK: The mission of YWCA is to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. What does YWCA's mission mean to you?
PHELICA: The mission of the YMCA means there is work for every resident of Topeka. We each play a role in order city's success. It's time for us to roll up our sleeves and get to work making Topeka a better place.
The YWCA is on a mission to empower women at all stages in their careers. Diversity in leadership is particularly vital to our vibrant business community in the Greater Topeka Area.
