Tammy Dishman | YWCA Women of Excellence
TK: What inspires you?
TAMMY: Random acts of kindness by strangers. Seeing people taking time to help others in need when they don't have to. It may be someone pulling over to help a stranded motorist or assisting someone who clearly needs some help getting their groceries into the car. Perhaps it is a situation where a card payment didn't go through and someone helps pay for their purchase with a smile on their face. Kindness is a powerful tool.
TK: What have you learned about yourself through the challenges of the past year and a half?
TAMMY: I guess at my age you learn that life is full of obstacles and I must be open minded and adjust to circumstances beyond my control. One must maintain a great attitude and think positively about the future no matter how tough the circumstances present.
TK: How do you take care of yourself?
TAMMY: I love to exercise and surround myself with fun friends. A good belly laugh can really make a wonderful difference.
TK: What is the best advice you've ever been given? Or what advice do you have for others?
TAMMY: In the workplace find a solid mentor. Then, in due time, return that favor by becoming a mentor to others.
TK: What is your vision for our community? Has it changed through the pandemic and racial justice reckoning of 2020?
TAMMY: My vision for our community is a safe and healthy environment where people choose to stay and see their kids and grandkids do the same. A special place where neighbors welcome and respect each other regardless of their background or differences.
TK: The mission of YWCA is to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. What does YWCA's mission mean to you?
TAMMY: The YWCA mission has promoted life skills and guidance for women and families in the community through a safe environment. The YWCA has continually stressed the value of diversity and inclusion with a plethora of programs throughout the years.
The YWCA is on a mission to empower women at all stages in their careers. Diversity in leadership is particularly vital to our vibrant business community in the Greater Topeka Area.
