Local Student, Classmates to Celebrate Newly Built Accessible Backyard Playground

Carter Brown together with the first-grade class at St. Marys Grade School celebrated the completion of Carter’s new accessible backyard playground with a “move that truck!” moment and playtime.

The playground is part of Carter’s new backyard oasis accessible to his wheelchair, complete with sensory experiences. Carter had a brain injury at birth that led to a cerebral palsy diagnosis. He is unable to sit unassisted or walk, so he uses a wheelchair throughout the day. A degenerative secondary diagnosis will cause future eyesight loss.

The new playground features a slide, accessible swing set, musical instruments, basketball goal, shade structure, and sand pit. It is covered in artificial turf that is easy for his wheelchair and playable no matter the weather conditions.

Also in attendance were Mammoth Strength for Service leadership crew who performed the installation of equipment and turf, Advisors Excel, who made sensory boxes, and Make-A-Wish Foundation of Missouri and Kansas.
