Pediatric Intensivist Mina Fanous, M.D., Joins Stormont Vail Health

Pediatric Intensivist Mina Fanous, M.D., Joins Stormont Vail Health

Stormont Vail Health announced that Mina Fanous, M.D., has joined our medical team and will practice as a pediatric intensivist, located at Stormont Vail Health, 1500 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, Kan., 66606.

Dr. Fanous grew up in Sudan. He completed medical school and his first internship in Khartoum before moving to the United States for a research project in Texas, his residency program in New York, and his fellowship in Tennessee. Dr. Fanous credits his experiences of living and training in a number of different places to his better understanding of people and cultures, which is what he believes is the first part of building a strong physician- patient relationship.

“Understanding the people that you’re serving is key,” said Dr. Fanous. “I think the three critical things people want from their physician is to feel they are genuine, they are hardworking, and they are listening...and that’s what I want to provide my patients with. Even if it’s something that we are experiencing for the first time, we are still going to do our best to make sure that we get through this.”

Dr. Fanous chose pediatric critical care because it gives him and his team the opportunity to work closely with patients and families and to get to know them on a deeper level. He notes that because he works in pediatrics, he not only focuses on his patient, but the whole family unit of the patient. Dr. Fanous also understands that the magnitude of care he is providing, is immeasurable to the patient’s family.

“What motivates me to do my job is the fact that we’re dealing with very sick children. It’s like, hey, you’re being trusted by these parents to take care of their most precious belonging. They trust you and put their kids in your hands, and the team’s hands, and are asking you, ‘can you help my child?’ So every time I think about this, it’s what keeps me going, on my toes to always try to be the best at my job, and make sure that we are offering the best care that this child deserves.”

Dr. Fanous describes himself as an easy going person who likes to spend time outdoors, play team sports and instruments, try new foods, and drink lots of coffee. His favorite sports are soccer, basketball, and handball and would like to join an adult soccer team in Northeast Kansas to feel engaged in the community. Now that Dr. Fanous’ training is complete, he said he is also looking forward to traveling and getting to know other cultures. He said the first place he plans to visit is Australia.

Mina Fanous, M.D., earned his medical degree from the University of Medical Science and Technology in Sudan. Dr. Fanous went on to be a medical house officer at Government Hospitals in Sudan before moving to the United States. He completed his pediatrics residency at Children’s Hospital at State University of New York and also became the chief resident during that time. Before joining Stormont Vail,
