What inspires you to get up and do the work?
One of the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library's community impact goals is that 'every child will be ready for kindergarten'. That statement inspires me. I am inspired by the work itself.

I am also inspired by my co-workers and colleagues in the community. Their work on behalf of young children and their parents or caregivers is phenomenal. I believe that we excel when we surround ourselves around others who have a similar commitment, talent, and passion. I am so fortunate to work with some incredibly talented and amazing people.

Finally, I am also inspired by the trust that our community has of the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library. This is no small thing, I understand the dedication and hard work that accomplished this.

What have you learned about yourself through the challenges you have overcome?
Resilience is something that is attributed to children, but it is also a quality that is present in all of us. I think that challenges have taught me the importance of relationships. A support network is priceless. I that it is equally important to be present in each moment. Time goes by quickly -in a blink of an eye. Finally, I value the importance of listening.

How do you take care of yourself?
I enjoy opening a book. Reading transports me to another place or time and I see the world through another's eyes. I value my family, friends, and faith. I enjoy connecting with nature, baking, and listening to music. I also like playing in the dirt -planting, watering, etc.

What is the best advice you've ever been given? Or what advice do you have for others?
I have received some incredible advice which has impacted my professional career and my personal life. It includes: Be flexible. Continue to grow and learn. Make note of the teachable moments. Treat everyone fairly. Build bridges.

What is your vision for our community? Has it changed through the pandemic and racial justice reckoning of recent years?
My vision for our community values our rich history, looks to opportunities for innovation, and seizes the potential of every member of our community. Our history is full of stories and voices that need to be heard. Innovation and ingenuity must be central as we seek to thrive and not just survive. I think that digital access is central to this. It is integral that we value and provide the education, training, and skills to compete in a global market. We also need talented individuals to be committed to our community.

The mission of YWCA is to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. What does YWCA's mission mean to you?
The mission of the YWCA is similar to the mission of the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library. It's mission resonates with me. Equity, diversity, and inclusion matter to me. A public library is for everyone. The library is a free community resource. It provides a learning environment where everyone is welcome.
