Sonya Boline | YWCA Women of Excellence Honoree
What inspires you to get up and do the work?
I am passionate about the patients we care for and the staff that care for them! I love people....Everyone has a story, and I love to hear about how they got here and what is their why?? Work-life balance for my staff is very important to me. If they are happy in life; they are happy at work.
What have you learned about yourself through the challenges you have overcome?
I am stronger than I ever thought possible. Life is painful and beautiful and worth it.
How do you take care of yourself
Potted flower gardening. I love to cook. Camping with my family.
What is the best advice you've ever been given? Or what advice do you have for others?
Always stand on your own two feet and no one can take advantage of you. Be firm in the things you believe in. It's okay to be fierce yet compassionate, principled yet flexible, have high expectations yet be kind.
What is your vision for our community? Has it changed through the pandemic and racial justice reckoning of recent years?
I would like to see more public health management by providing preventative services and care for chronic medical conditions and affordable medications to improve the health of those without insurance or access to healthcare. One great change were free meals for all. This allowed all children the ability to eat without stigma, and provided meals through the summer and times when school was virtual.
The mission of YWCA is to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. What does YWCA's mission mean to you?
I believe in a fair, humble, and tolerant society. Human beings should be kind and compassionate to other human beings. We are all valid and valuable. There is evil in the world, but there is more love than hate. As women, we need to support one another, polish each other's crowns, and raise one another on our shoulders.
