Topeka Zoo Mourns the Loss of Beloved Elderly Sun Bear, Ho Ho

The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Ho Ho, our beloved sun bear, at the remarkable age of 35 this morning. Born on October 19, 1989, at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Ho Ho was believed to be the oldest living sun bear in North America. He joined the Topeka Zoo family in 2017 after spending time at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo.

Ho Ho was not only a cherished member of our animal family but also a true icon among our visitors and followers. Known for his uniquely endearing appearance—his tongue often hanging out due to missing teeth—Ho Ho brought smiles and joy to guests from near and far. When visitors heard Ho Ho was outside, they would rush to see him, frequently exclaiming how cute he was.

Through his years with us, Ho Ho became a social media sensation. Fans traveled from states away just to meet him, and one couple even sent him a birthday card for his 35th birthday this October. Each birthday was a special celebration, thanks to Ho Ho’s age-defying charm. His keepers marked the milestones with themed parties featuring handmade decorations and treats, with the most recent one taking on a presidential theme in honor of his age eligibility to “run for office.”

The median life expectancy for male sun bears is estimated to be in the early to mid-20s, making Ho Ho’s longevity a testament to the exceptional care provided by our animal care and veterinary teams. Ho Ho was adored not only by his keepers but by staff from all areas of the zoo who readily contributed to his needs.

“Ho Ho brought an extraordinary light to the Topeka Zoo. He was a favorite among staff, guests, and fans across the country. His personality and charm reminded us all why we do what we do,” said Fawn Moser, Deputy Director of the Zoo.

While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the incredible impact Ho Ho had on the lives of so many. He will forever hold a special place in our hearts and in the legacy of the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center.

For those who wish to honor Ho Ho, we invite you to share your favorite memories and messages on our social media channels, where he will continue to bring joy to his devoted fans.
