Bicycle Festival, “Cyclovia Topeka,” to Pedal Through Capital City

Cyclovia Tucson Visit Topeka is excited to announce Cyclovia Topeka; a two-day event July 29 and 30, 2016.  Cyclovia is a Spanish term that means “cycle way,” or the closing of certain streets to automobiles for cyclist and pedestrians.  Visit Topeka is working on the details and creation of this event in response to its My Top Festival competition, where the public got the chance to create a festival.  More than 3,000 votes were cast on the Visit Topeka Facebook and web pages with a bicycle themed event receiving the most votes.  The theme of the event will revolve around bicycles although Visit Topeka wants to primarily focus on overall health, wellness and active living.  Yoga, Zumba, aerobics, healthy eating, and a health fair will all play a part in the weekend’s activities.

“This event will be like no other in Topeka,” said Brett Oetting, president & CEO of Visit Topeka. “Rather than focus on one area of the city, Cyclovia will send participants all over the city to our wonderful parks and trails.  We urge everyone to dust off their bicycle seats and oil their gears for a weekend of great healthy fun.”

The festival will begin Friday night with a glow ride followed by a concert as part of the Downtown Topeka Inc. Summer Concert Series.  The event will resume Saturday morning with rides and events all over the city, as well as obstacle courses and safety training for kids and families.  Local organizations leading activities during the event include: Topeka Metro Bikes, Topeka Community Cycle Project, Heartland BMX, Kaw Valley Bicycle Club, Lava Yoga, Zumba Fitness, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Shawnee County Parks and Recreation, and Downtown Topeka Inc.

“We have been completely overwhelmed at the interest and support in making Cyclovia Topeka a memorable event,” Oetting said.  “Partnerships like these are what make not only our festivals better but improve the overall quality of life in Topeka.”
