SouthWind Gallery Chosen to Host Prestigious American Plains Artists Signature Exhibit

EdwardsBarbaraS 2 In the Trees 16x12 OilSouthWind Gallery, 3074 SW 29th Street, will be the exclusive host for the 2016 American Plains Artists Signature Exhibit.  The Opening Reception for this prestigious art show will be March 4, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., in conjunction with Topeka’s First Friday Art Walk. Titled, Art of the Plains, the exhibit features the work of 30 artists who are “Signature” members of the American Plains Artists (APA) organization. They are nationally recognized artists from throughout the United States who have earned the right to APA Signature status and are elected, in large part, due to the continual high quality of their artwork.  The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, runs through April 23, 2016. “SouthWind Gallery is somewhat unique among private galleries because we often host juried shows for regional and national arts organizations in addition to our own ongoing exhibits,” said Gary Blitsch, owner of Southwind Gallery. “We consider it an honor to be asked because it tells us these organizations recognize the standards we’ve set in choosing the high quality of artwork we prefer to show.”

The Chosen Ones Jammey HugginsBlitsch went on to say that another benefit to hosting the shows is, “It gives our community an opportunity to see works by many well-known artists without having to travel to the larger art markets such as New York.”

The  APA Art of the Plains exhibit at SouthWind Gallery will showcase realistic and representational artworks in traditional media that depict the American Great Plains region—its landscape, wildlife, people, and way of life. The APA was established in 1982, by a group of artists who sought to portray through their art the variety to be found in the vast region known as the American Plains. The Plains area stretches westward from the Missouri River at Omaha and Kansas City, to the Rocky Mountains, and northward from the Texas Panhandle into the Canadian Prairie Provinces.
