Three Topeka professionals explain why they left their thriving careers behind to venture outside their comfort zones in pursuit of a new challenge.
“If you are able to make an emotional connection with the audience, it has the power to not only change minds, but hearts,” Whisman said. “When the message spread in a way I'd never been able to do on my own — despite all of the networks and teams we had working together — that’s where it started to shift for me.”
“I thought I was on this road by myself to find what was going to make me happy,” Casper said. “But it’s turned into a journey for the whole family, something we can do together.”
“You're shining a light in areas that need a little bit of help,” Wade said. “You're helping a community celebrate. You’re certainly helping citizens stay in touch with what's going on. You’re holding others accountable.”
While the pandemic has challenged these three Topeka event businesses, it has also flexed their creativity and compassion like never before. After all, the show must go on, even if it takes on a different form.
While the Jayhawk Theatre remains indefinitely closed to audiences, it recently debuted a new live stream offering, Jayhawk Theatre Live, that allows patrons to enjoy the historic stage from the safety of their homes.
Passion for the extraordinary is what got Cheryl Clark into event planning. That same passion is helping her push her business through extraordinary circumstances.
Most people don’t realize that Vaerus Aviation has been holding events in its hangar for several years. The unique venue has hosted Advisor’s Excel Christmas parties, several weddings and numerous corporate events. And now, after partnering with Abby Wempe, owner of Along Came Abby, those who rent the venue can also utilize the services of a professional event planner.
Dedicated to their customers, they’ve been working hard to make sure their travelers’ investments are protected, either through refunds or future travel credits.
“We stay on top of things for people and sort through the information. I can’t imagine navigating it on my own as a consumer,” Henry said.
Picture your kids walking right onto the coolest new attraction and going as many times as they want. Needing an energy boost, they head to the front of the snow cone line, where they get all the sugary ice they can slurp. Now imagine watching it all from a cushioned chair, shaded by an expansive umbrella.
“We’re a traveling society, but we have to entertain ourselves,” said Buckley. “People are learning staying home isn’t so bad after all.”
