What have you learned since you were selected?

The recognition of one of Topeka’s 20 Under 40 provided me exposure to leaders in our community on a level that allowed me to become more engaged. I have learned that there is always an opportunity to do more to contribute to a mission or strategic plan; being involved is the highest reward.

What do you know now that you wish you knew then?

I have always been aware that the driving force of leadership is the motivation to achieve; however, I have not always recognized how this can make my relationships seem transactional to others. Recently I have been influenced to nurture an attitude of gratitude, and to find ways to show that I care for others – in ways that they find valuable. Being gracious and recognizing gratitude in others is a skill I wish I had been more cognizant of in my past; now I embrace it.

What advice would you give to aspiring young professionals?

Strengthen your relationships and continue to build new ones. In trying times like the current pandemic, the people you have shown appreciation to will have your back.
