Amy Calhoun | YWCA Women of Excellence Honoree
What inspires you to get up and do the work?
I believe it is crucial that all students have a safe space to learn and grow. Our community has so much to offer, but until each student is able to feel safe, valued, and accepted, I will continue to advocate for those who need it.
What have you learned about yourself through the challenges you have overcome?
Learning how my personality and strengths impact my approach to problem-solving and leadership has given me more confidence to do the work that needs to be done. I've learned that my approach may be different or unorthodox to others, but I am now able to lead without fear of comparison.
How do you take care of yourself?
I am sure many of us struggle with this! I enjoy watching my boys play in the yard, reading or listening to books, and spending time with the people I love and my pets.
What is the best advice you've ever been given? Or what advice do you have for others?
"Do not grow weary in your well-doing." I was given this advice during a struggle in leadership, and it has motivated me to continue working towards my goals. It is not always easy when you are working towards the right thing -- especially when that may not be the status quo. But remembering that what I am doing is good and important helps me to stay strong and focused in my work. I have begun to pass this wisdom along to those I mentor, as well.
What is your vision for our community? Has it changed through the pandemic and racial justice reckoning of recent years?
The pandemic and social justice issues that have surfaced in recent years have been eye-opening for me. I am compelled to speak up, stand up, and show up for my BIPOC, LGBTQ+, or other minority students, who may not be able to do so for themselves. I want to ensure that our community is welcoming, inviting, and appealing to all students, families, and individuals.
The mission of YWCA is to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. What does YWCA's mission mean to you?
It means that every individual will have access to education, where they feel emboldened and free to explore their identities and passions without restraint or condemnation. I am appreciative of the YWCA for their continued efforts and support, as I work to empower my own students to find their voices and advocate for their own place of belonging.
