Stormont Vail Health Welcomes Alec Britt, M.D., to the Topeka Campus Cancer Care Team
Stormont Vail Health welcomes Dr. Alec Britt, a board-certified internist specializing in hematology and oncology, to the Stormont Vail Cancer Care team. Dr. Britt will practice at the Cotton O'Neil Cancer Center, 1414 S.W. 8th Ave., in Topeka.
For Dr. Britt, perspective is everything. The oldest of five children, Dr. Britt naturally tended to care for others. At the same time, his mother, a nurse, instilled an interest in medicine at a young age. Growing up, his family frequently relocated for his father's military career. His early exposure to how people live and work across the U.S. supports his work by helping him connect with diverse patient populations, going a long way toward building trust and positive relationships.
Dr. Britt's upbringing wasn't the only source of his perspective. While pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a concentration in Neurobiology at The University of Kansas in Lawrence, he knew he wanted to enter medicine. But when his mother received an advanced cancer diagnosis, the care his mother's doctors, nurses, and care team provided her and their family moved him to specialize in hematology and oncology.
"I drove her [mother] to her chemo appointments, watched her hair fall out, watched her suffer," Dr. Britt said. "But we also watched her come back and overcome, and it's so hard to understate the importance of that journey. Having a doctor who's gone through it themselves or with someone else is so crucial in this line of work. It drives home the importance of having someone who knows what it's like to go through it. I can be that person for my patients."
Dr. Britt earned his medical degree at The University of Kansas School of Medicine. He completed his Residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at The University of Kansas Medical Center. As the newest Stormont Vail Cancer Care team member, Dr. Britt looks forward to providing the same care and support his mother and family received during their journey.
